Fretting

Guitar fretting has been considered one of the hardest techniques to master. In some cases, you only need to move your fingers small distances around the fret board. In other cases, your hands may fly up and down the fret board at astonishing speeds.

In order to master fretting, you must follow this one small piece of advice: Whatever you do, do not lift your fingers more then on half of and inch off the fret board when playing notes. If you follow this advice, your fingers will reach the frets faster, and this will also help to reduce the chance of you playing an open string.

It would be a good idea to start practicing fretting while playing a very simple scale. Start off slowly, and as you get used to moving your fingers from fret to fret, gradually pick up speed. If you would like, skip around a bit. Play every other fret, for instance. Once you get the feel for the guitar, it seems that your fingers will move "naturally" along the fret board.

If you seem to be having trouble mastering this technique, don't worry. Many guitarists face the same problem as you do. Fretting is not an easy thing. It takes practice and patience to develop this skill.
