The Note

A note is a symbol that represents two things, the duration of it, and the sound it will have. The way to tell the duration from the note is the way it looks. A specific type of note that indicates no playing is called a rest.

Parts of the Note:

The stem is the part can be facing either up or down. The head is the part that is used to tell the pitch of the note.

Different Notes:

A Semibreve or more commonly know as whole note:
In the time signature of 4/4 it will last an entire measure or four beats.
A Minim or more commonly know as a half note:
In the time signature of 4/4 it will last half a measure or two beats.
A Crotchet or more commonly know as a quarter note:
In the time signature of 4/4 it will last a quarter of a measure or one beat.
A Quaver or more commonly know as an eighth note:
In a time signature of 4/4 it will last half a beat.
A Semiquaver or more commonly know as a sixteenth note:
In a time signature of 4/4 it will last one-quarter of a beat.
A Demisemiquaver or more commonly know as a thirty-second note:
In a time signature of 4/4 it will last one-eighth a beat.
A Hemidemisemiquaver or more commonly know as a sixty-fourth note:
In a time signature of 4/4 it will last one-sixteenth a beat.

If there are more than one eight note in a row, they are grouped with a beam.

Groups of sixteenth notes are grouped with a double beam. Groups of thirty-second notes have a triple beam, and groups of sixty-fourth notes have a quadruple beam.

This is another way the notes break down, each line has the same time value.

Pitch of the Note

This higher the note's head is on the staff, the higher the pitch.

Names of the Notes

Notes are named by letters "a" - "g" of the alphabet. These letters are just repeated over and over to account for all different notes.
