Sandra Day O’Connor

Sandra Day O’Connor was born in El Paso, Texas in 1930. She graduated from Stanford Law School (where she also met her husband, John O’Connor) in 1952. She worked as an assistant attorney general in Arizona between 1965 and 1969, then took a seat on the Arizona state senate for 4 years. In 1974, she was appointed as a superior court judge in Arizona. She served in the Arizona court of appeals from 1979 to 1981. Then in 1981, President Regan nominated O’Connor to the U.S. Supreme Court. She became the first female supreme court justice, and has served on it since. She is generally a conservative voter, but often has had the deciding vote. Sandra Day O’Connor has set an example for other American and international women.
