Madeleine Albright
Madeleine Korbel Albright was born in 1937. Her family fled Czechoslovakia from the Nazis, eventually settling in Colorado. Albright studied political science at Wellesley College, and continued to get her Ph.D. at Columbia University. She was the President of the Center for National Policy (a non profit research organization), she taught courses in international affairs at Georgetown University, and developed programs to enhance women’s professional opportunities. Between 1976 and 1981, she worked as a chief legislative assistant to a senator and a staff member in the national security council. She served as a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for scholars (1981-82) and also as a senior fellow in Soviet and Eastern European Affairs. In 1993, she was appointed the United States permanent representative to the UN, and in 1997, she was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate as the first female secretary of state.
