Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland in 1920. After fearing she would be sold, she made a daring escape to Pennsylvania. As a conductor on the ‘underground railroad’, she returned to Maryland to help over 300 other slaves escape to freedom. During the civil war, Harriet Tubman worked as a union spy and nurse. After the civil war ended and slavery was abolished, she set up a home for elderly blacks. She died in 1913, but the legend of her bravery and struggle lives on.
