Queen Hatshepsut

Born around 1500 BC, Hatshepsut was the daughter of pharaoh Thutmose I of Egypt. Following tradition, she married her half brother Thutmose II. He died young, and his young son by a concubine, Thutmose III was his heir. Thutmose III was too young to rule, so Hatshepsut ruled in his place. He married her daughter, and grew old enough to rule, but she refused to relinquish her throne. Hatshepsut claimed she had the support of Amon-Ra, and that she was the rightful pharaoh. She co-ruled with Thutmose III, but had most of the power, an she used that power to increase Egypt’s trading with foreign lands and to build many temples. Hatshepsut Ruled until about 1460 BC. Then Thutmose III, angry at her control of him destroyed many of her temples, and her mummy was never found. Hatshepsut was one of the first and only female pharaohs, but her reign was an extraordinary one that set up a long legacy.
