The three main types of Japanese castles are mountaintop (yamajiro), flatland-mountain (hirayamajiro), flatland (hirajiro). As you can easily tell, the castle types are named according to their location. That is because a castle's location is most important for defensive reasons. Though each place has its good points, there are also downfalls to each location.
