In captivity pandas have lived up to about 20
years in captivity but they live longer in the wild. There are only
about 144 specimens in zoos and they do not breed well in captivity.
In 1972 a trade was made between China and the U.S., two Pandas
(Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling) for two musk oxen. Hsing-Hsing eats about
20 pounds of bamboo each day. Ling-Ling died in 1992 the oldest Panda
that had lived in captivity up to then. Su-lin was the first Giant
Panda out of China and he was taken to live in Chicago. The first
birth in captivity away from China happened in Mexico. You can see
more Pandas in captivity at the Santiago Zoo.
