After the Titanic sank, it was considered the worst sea tragedy ever. Just months after the Titanic sank and the inquiries were over, the race to find the greatest ship ever built began. First, the French started nosing the seabed where the Titanic's longitude and latitude distress call was sent to the Carpathia. Four months later, they had given up and didn't even get a sniff of the lost wreck. People all over the United States of America and Britain started to get used to seeing the headlines always being "Search For Titanic Failure." But in 1986 at 1:00 a.m., Robert D. Ballard was in the the control room on the ship Le Suroit. Ballard was on the graveyard watch and suddenly something fuzzy appeared on the screen. Soon everyone on board the ship was standing around. As the submersible moved closer everyone stared in awe. They had found one of the Titanic's 29 huge boilers. The next day Ballard went down personally to explore the wreck in his submersible "Alvin." After a two and a half hour descent to the ocean bottom, they started their way toward were they thought the ship rested. Suddenly something started to form outside. Four minutes later they had notified the people in the control room that they were the first ones, in 75 years, to see the bow of the wonder ship. Then suddenly a sad comment came from the control room. "You guys look at the time. Don't you think we should say a prayer or something" Then everyone stared at the clock. It said 2:15---the same time anyone saw the Titanic last. When Robert D. Ballard found the Titanic, it sparked people to think that their were riches waiting to be found within the giant ship. But the only company that was allowedd to salvage the wreck was Robert D. Ballard and his crew in the Company of "RMS Titanic, Inc." On Saturday, February 13, 1999, a historic moment in Titanic history occurred in Saint Paul, Minnesota at the Union Dept. For months, Robert D. Ballard had been trying to get one big chunk that fell from the ship when it sank. After many failures they finally got the piece. When they got it to Saint Paul, they made an exhibit that would feature two big things; the Titanic's whistles and "The Big Piece" of hull. Then. on February 13, 1999 in front of more than 10,000 people, they blew the Titanic's whistles two times.(Click here to see picture of whistles)
