Building the Titanic
The year of 1907 was when the first ideas for the
Titanic and her sister ship, the Olympic, were born. Then on one hot
summer day, Thomas Andrew sent his 14,000 Harland and Wolf workers to
a hard day of building two ships 882 1/2 foot long, with a height of
an eleven story building, the most luxurious ships in the world---the
Olympic and Titanic. Just to give you a picture of how big the
Titanic and Olympic were, one double-ended boiler weighed 100 tons
and there were 29 of those. Another example is the huge anchors that
took twenty horses to carry a fifteen-and-a-half ton anchor. That's
the same as fifteen and a half average elephants.
When the Titanic and Olympic were built they
set new luxury records. Some of the features on the new Titanic
were:
- Grand staircase
- Swimming pool
- Turkish bath
- Smoking room
- Dinning saloon
- Gymnasium
- Cafe Parisian
- Palm Court
- Writing room
- Reception room
- Lounge
- And huge decks
