You have to stand behind the baseline and serve the ball diagonally inside the service box on the other side of the court. The other person has to hit the ball back over the net. You have to hit the ball with your racquet and you cannot use your hands or any other body parts. I you hit the ball out or the ball goes into the net then you lose the point. The net has to be 36 inches high. The court is usually green or red. There is singles in which 2 people play against each other, and there is doubles in which 2 people play against 2 other people at the same time. Only in doubles you use the ALLEYS which are expressed as points C and D in the diagram below, and if the ball hits the ALLEYS it is counted IN. If the ball hits the ALLEYS during singles it is counted OUT. Go to this tennis web-site at the bottom of the page.
How to Keep Score and the Object...
There is a DEUCE side and a ADD side. As shown from the diagram above, from point A to point A is the DEUCE side, and from point B to point B is the ADD side. The person who serves first, serves diagonally to the service box on the DEUCE side. If the person serving wins the first point then is 15-0. The serving persons score is always said first. If the person not serving makes a point the it is 15-15. Then it goes to 30-15 or 15-30, depending on who wins the point. After thirty comes 40-? or ?-40. If a person has 40 and they make another point before the other person gets to 40 then that person wins the game. If the score is 40-40 or DEUCE then you can chose either to play ADVANTAGE [AD] or NO-ADVANTAGE [NO-AD]. NO-AD is when the person receiving gets to choose the side on which he wants to receive and the person serving serves only once and whoever wins the point wins the game. AD is when it is deuce you serve ; if you win the point it is AD-IN ; if you lose the point it is AD-OUT. In the AD's you have to serve to the ADD side. If you win the point and you are ADD-IN then you win the game. I you are ADD-OUT and you win the point then you go back to DEUCE. If you are ADD-OUT and you lose the point then you lose the game. You have to win 6 games in order to win a set. If you are 6-6 in games then you play a TIE-BREAKER ; the person that did not serve in the game before the TIE-BREAKER gets to serve first in the TIE-BREAKER; you only get to serve one time. The score is kept in numbers like 1-0 or 5-3 or 6-4 depending on how many points you win. You play until somebody gets to 7 points winning by 2 points. You can only win if you are ahead by 2 points.
