Baseball is older than America itself. In 1866 while General Lee surrendered to Grant over 30,000 people were watching a baseball game played between the Old Athletics and the Brooklyn Atlantics.
Back then baseball rules were different. If a ball hit the ground and then went over the fence that was still considered a home run. This allowed more runs. In one game the Niagara Club of New York beat the New York Columbians 209 to 10 with 58 runs scored in the 8th inning. That is the highest scoring game in the history of baseball.
The record for the fastest run around the bases was 13.3 seconds. 1871 was the first year that players started traveling from city to city by train. This allowed more games to be played by team from farther away. Also people could watch teams from other parts of the nation.
A man named Arch Ward inaugurated the All Star Games.
