Lightning is a natural short-lived high-current electrical discharge in the atmosphere. Lightning heats the air to about 27,000 degrees Fahrenheit in a few thousandths of a second. Lightning can be as strong as 1,000,000 volts. Lightning tries to find the nearest way to get to earth. Ball lightning is a type of lightning some people even claim it has intelligence. Every day in the U.S. there are about 40,000,000 lightning strikes.

Benjamin Franklin first suggested the use of lightning rods. Benjamin Franklin first discovered that lightning is electricity with his famous kite experiment. The cost in the U.S. for lightning damage is about 300,000,000 per year. Lightning is the cause of 10,000 forest fires a year. The explosive heating and expansion of air causes a shock wave we know as thunder. About 200 people are killed by lightning every year.
