The Great Egret is a white bird that is considered to be
beautiful. It's plume feathers is the reason it is endangered. Ladies used them to
decorate their hats. The feathers were also used for fancy pens (quill pens). Fortunately
we no longer use Great Egret feathers in hats. We also don't use quill pens made from
Great Egret feathers anymore.
The Great Egret belongs to the Heron family. The Great
Egret has a sharp beak used to spear fish with. It has long legs to help
enable it to step in deeper water to spear bigger fish.
The Great Egret grows it's feathers during the mating
season and looses them after their children are born.
