The double bass, a larger version of the bass, is the largest instrument in the string family, measuring up to 6 feet high! The bass has four strings. The contrabass is another word for the double bass. Modern basses have four strings, but in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the basses had three strings. Some three-stringed basses are still used in Eastern European folk music. Bass players now-a-days would probably use an out-curved bow. The in-curved bows were used in the nineteenth century. The bass has a low pitched sound and differentiates   greatly in sound from the other orchestra instruments.
