The Starry Night was painted on a canvas with oil paints.  The Starry Night was and is his most well known painting. Van Gogh's inner turmoil was expressed by the swirling in his paintings. In a crazy house Van Gogh lived in, he looked out the window. His imagination transformed the sky he really saw into "The Starry Night."
