Picture courtesty of David Brooks www.vangoghgallery.com
One letter that Van Gogh wrote to his sister Anna stated, "I think that the picture of the peasants eating potatoes that I painted in Nuenen is the best of all my work. Van gogh considered The Potato Eaters the best he had made. It was the only one he thought was worth showing to the public. He insisted that his bother Theo should sell it to the art dealer he worked for. Van Gogh was, as modern people would say, "obsessed" with his painting. The Potato Eaters represents the life of peasants. The painting shows how poor the peasants were by having them eat potatoes as a meal. Van Gogh became friends with a family of peasants named the De Groots. He completed the painting on May 6,1885. Van Gogh painted many other peasants too. All of his peasant paintings show real people. |
