Mechanical energy is made up of moving energy.  This form of energy is the easiest to identify.  Whenever you see something moving it has mechanical energy.  If you ever see something moving, try to figure out what form of energy besides mechanical made it move.  That is a great way to test your knowledge because there is always an answer.

Experiment

Materials:
long piece of yarn
plastic straw
2 chairs
balloon
tape

Procedure:
Tie one end of the yarn onto part of a chair.  Then slip the yarn through the straw and tie the other end onto the second chair.  Blow up the balloon and tape it onto the straw but don't tie or tape the balloon shut.  Slide the straw to one end of the yarn and let it go.  What other forms of energy besides mechanical energy were used?
