YUKON TERRITORY

Yukon is a territory. The difference between a territory and a province is that a territory is controlled by the government and a province has its own government. The Yukon Territory entered the Canadian Confederation on June 13, 1898. It is very sparcely settled. This territories name comes from the Yukon River. The word "Yukon" comes from a Native American expression meaning "great river."

In 1897, a gold rush occurred in Yukon Territory. It was called the Klondike Gold Rush. It took place in the city of Dawson. The city of Dawson became a city of over 25, 000 people almost overnight. Two years later, it became a town of over 40,000 people. Some $100 million dollars worth of gold was discovered in the region between 1896 and 1904.
