A 1996 census recorded 7,138,795 people inhabit Quebec. Most people live in the southeast. French is the language of 81% of the people. Nine percent speak English as their native language. More than 75,000 Native Americans live in Quebec. Montreal is the largest city in Quebec and is the most populous. Other big cities include Laval, Quebec, the provincial capital, Longueuil, Gateneau, and Montreal-Nord.
