POPULATION

The population in 1996 was 738,133 people. English was the lone tongue of 64% of the population. French was the sole first language of 33% of the population. Most of the 9,400 Native Americans residing in New Brunswick live on reserves. The majority of the people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Forty-eight percent of the population live in urban areas. The large communities in News Brunswick are Saint John, Moncton, Fredricton, the capital, Riverview, Bathurst, Edmundston, and Dieppe.
