POPULATION

In 1996, there were 1,113,898 people living in Manitoba. Most of the people live in the southern fifth of the province. Seventy-two percent of the people live in urban areas. More than half of the population live in and around Winnepeg, the capital of Manitoba. Winnepeg is the largest city as well. Other cities include Brandon, Portage La Prairie, and Thompson. English is the primary language of 73% of the population. French is the first language of about 4% of the population. Other languages include Ukranian, German, and various indigenous languages. The two major religions are Roman Catholicism and the United Church of Canada.
