PLANTS AND ANIMALS

Forests cover about 19% of the Northwest Territories. These forests are found in the northern part of the territory. The dominant trees include spruce, pine, birch and larch. The best trees are along the MacKenzie River.


Large mammals found in the Northwest Territories include caribou, moose, grizzly, black bear, wolf, lynx, beaver, marten, and muskrat. Wood bison can be found in the Wood Buffalo National Park. The tundra has musk-ox, caribou, artic fox and polar bear.


Sea mammals include seal, walrus, marwhal, and small Beluga whale. In the short artic summer, bird migrate to the territory. Freshwater fish include grayling, pickerel, trout, whitefish, northern pike, and artic char.
