MAJOR GEOGRAPHIC RESOURCES
Most of Manitoba lies within the Canadian Shield. This shield is a region of ancient volcanic and metamorphic rocks with a heavily glaciated land surface. Southern Manitoba has a large, flat plain that is known for its lakes and forests. The two principal rivers in Manitoba are the Winnipeg River and the Red River of the north.
Many large and small lakes are scattered throughout the shield section of Manitoba, but the provinces largest lakes are Winnipeg, Winnipegosis, and Manitoba. Lake Winnipeg is the largest lake. These lakes provide the people of Manitoba and visitors with good sport and commercial fishing.
