Quebec is a major inland seaport located along the St. Lawrence river. Most of the people living here work in the service sectors and public administration, and are French-speaking.

Quebec was the capital of Lower Canada from 1791-1841. With the formation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, the city of Quebec was made the capital of the province of Quebec. The name Quebec come from an Algonquian term for "narrowing of the waters."
