AMELIA'S BACKGROUND

Amelia's Work Experience

During World War One, Amelia was a nurse's aid in Toronto. She worked at Spandina Military hospital. Some of Amelia's patients were military pilots who had taken part in dogfights in aerial fights over the battlefields in Europe. But what really sparked Amelia was their daring air-to-air stories.

AMELIA & HER HUSBAND

Her Family

When Ameilia was a little girl she had a sister named Muriel Earhart, who was two years younger than her.

Muriel & Amelia were very alike. They both loved to have adventures, go fishing & play ball. Amelia's mom was Amy Earhart. Amy was the first woman to climb Pikes Peak in Colorado. When Amelia was a little girl Amy would make dark blue knee-high bloomers for Muriel & Amelia so they could go adventuring in caves, go fishing & do other fun things without getting tangled up or getting their dresses so dirty you would have to wash them to shreds. Amelia & Muriel were free from rules. Their parents let them do anything they wanted, climb trees, play ball, run & jump, use hammers & nails, saws, throw snowballs, collect frogs, go fishing & many more things. Amelia's father was Edwin Earhart. Amy & Edwin loved each other, however Amy's father Alfred Otis (Amelia's grandfather) wanted Amy to be a belle of the Atchison Society. He was disappointed when she got married to Edwin Earhart, a son of a minister.

Amelia's Education

Happy years went by for Amelia. She finished school and learned to swim and ride horses in her spare time. After Amelia finished high school, she studied in Philadelphia. Muriel, her sister went to a school in Toronto, Canada. Then one vacation Amelia went to Toronto to visit Muriel. Amelia saw a lot of soldiers from world war one. She felt so sorry for all of them who had been working so hard and now they had to walk around on crutches. Maybe some of them were even paralyzed Amelia thought. Then Amelia decided to be a nurses aid in Toronto to help the poor people. Amelia got a job in a hospital. She also brought medicine to the hurt men. One of Amelia's days off, Amelia and a friend went to an airfield near Toronto. They saw a man doing daredevil stunts, and Amelia was frightened. But Amelia loved it.

When the war ended Amelia went to Columbia University in New York City. Amelia then thought she might want to be a doctor. Later Amelia decided not to be a doctor. She felt it was not meant for her. But by this time Amelia's parents were in Los Angeles, California. So Amelia left Columbia University and went to California.
