Koala's Habitat

Koalas live in social groups and they stay in one area. Koalas keep their own "home range" areas. Koalas are highly territorial. Koalas can only be found in Australia. They were nearly exterminated around the turn of the century. Koalas died from diseases and were slaughtered for their fur. Their habitats were also destroyed by fires caused by humans. Koalas are now found only in the eucalyptus forests of Australia.

The koalas that live in the south are bigger than the koalas that live in the north. The Victoria Koala's habitat is in one of the most coldest parts of Australia. The Queensland Koala's habitat is in one of the warmest parts of Australia.

The numbers of koalas in the wild are 2,000 to 8,000! Even though the koala is not officially endangered, the population of the koala has dropped 90% in less then 10 years. This is do to the destruction of their natural habitat. Agriculture and cities of Australia have reduced the area available to them.
