Gerbils

Back

Gerbils are rodents. There are about 100 species of Gerbils. The wild gerbils live in the dry parts of Africa and Asia. The Mongolian Gerbil is the most popular gerbil. Gerbils are popular pets in the United States and in some other countries.

Gerbils are almost the same size as an adult rat. The length of their head and body is 3-7 inches and the length of their tail is 3-9 inches. They weigh about 1-7 ounces. Wild gerbils live underground. They can live up to four years.

Food and Feeding

p32.jpg (130401 bytes)You should feed your Gerbils fresh veggies or fruit, plus fresh water so they can stay healthy. You should also feed your Gerbil food pellets but make sure to read the labels. Gerbils eat a lot, but when you go shopping for your gerbils watch out because you could get the wrong food. Make sure you get grass at the stores and a salt lick because it helps them digest their food.

                                                       Gerbil Care

Gerbils are very easy to take care of so if you think it’s hard it’s not, you just need to spend time with them so they won't get scared of you. All you need to do is get a cardboard box and put sunflower seeds in it and put your gerbil in there then when he’s done take him or her out and hold them so they can get used to you.

The bottom of a gerbil’s cage should be either wood shavings, saw dust, or another material that gerbils can sleep comfortably on.

Gerbils need hard things to chew on to shorten their teeth.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE A GERBIL

mouse.jpg (570295 bytes)When you get a gerbil you need a cage with bars or a glass cage, and you need hay for bedding. You need water and any mixed food, but be careful because they have sharp claws. When you touch them when they are eating they will turn around and bite you. So try to be careful.

Why Do Gerbils Chew So Much?

Gerbils are born to chew, so they can’t help it because they like to chew. The wild gerbils teeth are constantly in action. Gerbils like to munch on hardy plants, roots, seeds, and crunchy insects, gerbils also like to gnaw on twigs, bark, and dried grass to build their nests. Gerbils teeth grow non-stop. If they didn’t chew their teeth might grow too long so they won’t be able to close their mouth. So if you see your gerbil chewing like crazy on its cage bars think nothing of it. When gerbils chew it keeps their teeth just the right length!

What Rodents Do

A rodent is an animal that has front teeth usually used to gnaw hard objects. Animal rodents are Squirrels, Beavers, and Rats. Squirrels front teeth are so strong that they can crack open a nut with them. Beavers can gnaw through tree trunks, and rats can gnaw through some wood and plaster walls. Many kinds of rodents include Gophers, Hamsters, Mice, and Porcupines. All kinds of rodents have two top teeth and two bottom teeth called incisors. They wear away at the tips but do not continue to grow until they are old. The incisors in the back wear faster  than in the front. As a result, they form a chisel-like edge, well-suited for gnawing. Rodents have back teeth for chewing

Rodents are Mammals

There are more individual rodents than there are individuals of other kinds of mammals combined. Rodents live in almost all parts of the world. Mice are the smallest rodents and capybaras of South America are the largest. Some capybaras are up to 4 feet long. Most rodents are plant eaters, but rats and some other rodents will eat almost anything they can find. Rodents are both helpful and harmful to people.
