The sub was made in August 1863. It was about 30 feet long, 5 feet high and 4 feet wide. It had no engine, but it was powered by 8 men crews that turned cranks positioned along the drive shift extendeding most of the length of the vessel. This sub was the first true submarine. The sub did not go under water completely, it was just on the surface. Test dives in Mobile Bay showed that the sub could stay underwater for 2 hours before the crew ran out of air. The sub was designed to tow a bomb, put it under an enemy ship, and have it explode. The sub could sink the enemy's ship by ramming it with the sub's torpedo. This sub was the first sub to ever sink an enemy ship. The sub went down with the Norths ship because the torpedo didnt break off or because she came apart in the ship's explosion. |
