Summary: Matt started the day's reading from Robinson
Crusoe. In a couple of minutes Attean stood up and yelled, "NOT SLAVE," and
ran out of the cabin.
The
Lesson
Attean came in though the door, and he sat right by me. He said,
"Read!" I started to read Robinson Crusoe. When I stopped
reading, Attean said, "Fish." I grabbed my line and followed Attean
through the woods to get to the stream.
Attean speared a fish. It was big and fat . I figured it
must have weighed 4 pounds and was probably 10 inches long. Attean said, "You
try." I stepped into the cold icy water. I could feel the pebbles
under my feet and the fish looking at me funny, like I was a big giant to them. As I took
the spear, I aimed for the fish. I felt like a real Indian with that spear in
my left hand. The fish that I had my eye on suddenly stopped. I brought back
the spear, ready to lurch into the water. I threw it forward into the water, but I
failed. I fell into the water. Attean probably thought, "Dumb White
Man!"
