The Lesson

Attean came in though the door, and he sat right by me.  He said, "Read!" I started to read Robinson Crusoe.   When I stopped reading, Attean said, "Fish."   I grabbed my line and followed Attean through the woods to get to the stream.

Attean speared a fish.  It was big and fat .  I figured it must have weighed 4 pounds and was probably 10 inches long.  Attean said, "You try."   I stepped into the cold icy water.  I could feel the pebbles under my feet and the fish looking at me funny, like I was a big giant to them. As I took the spear, I aimed for the fish.  I felt like a real Indian with that spear in my left hand.  The fish that I had my eye on suddenly stopped.  I brought back the spear, ready to lurch into the water.   I threw it forward into the water, but I failed.  I fell into the water.   Attean probably thought, "Dumb White Man!"
