Jewelry Terms

acetylene gas- A colorless gas that is highly flammable. It is a poisonous gas.

brass- an alloy containing copper or zinc.

 

copper- a reddish metallic element that is one of the best conductors for heat and electricity.

 

crock pot- used for an electric cooking pot.

 

drills- A tool for making holes in hard substances.

flux- Something you put in to keep the piece clean.

gold- a soft yellow metallic element that is used especially in coins and jewelry.

 

hand pliers- A small pincers for holding small objects or for bending and cutting wire.

pickling- an acid was h that gets rid of black rust.

 

Polishing Wheel- To make smooth and glossy usually by rubbing.

silver- a soft white metallic element that takes a high polish and is a better conductor of heat and electricity than any other material.

saw- A hand or power tool or a machine used to cut hard material and equipped usually with a tooth-edged blade.

soap- used for washing.

 

toothbrushes- a cleaning tool that brushes away dust or little things that need to be brushed away.

torch- Something that guides or gives light or heat like a torch.

 

 

Pottery Terms

bisque-unglazed or colored clay wares that have been fired only once. Generally to a maturing temperature.

ceramics- articles made of clay that are shaped while moist and hardened by heat.

 

mold- a frame on, in, or around which something is constructed or shaped.

 

brushes- tools made of bristles set in a back or handle and used for cleaning, smoothing, or painting.

die- any of various devices used for cutting, shaping, or stamping a material or object.

extrude- to shape by forcing through a die.

 

fettle- a cleaning tool to get rid of the seamline.

glaze- to cover a piece of greenware with a polish used for making clay shiny.

 

greenware- a piece that is not fully hardened.

homogeneous consistency- of the same thickness in every area.

kick wheel- a potter's wheel propelled by the foot.

 

fire- to bake a piece in a kiln.

 

kiln- an oven or furnace for hardening, burning, or drying something.

pottery- the art of making pots and bowls from clay.

 

potter's wheel- a horizontal disk revolving on a spindle and carrying the clay being shaped by the potter.

 

seam line- a line where two molds meet and make a seam.

 

slip- a thin wet clay used in pottery for casting, decorations, molding, or as a cement.

spoolie- a cleaning brush. It is used to clean the piece.

 

stylist- a tool that carves initials in piece and carves in detail.

throw- to make a pot on a wheel.

underglaze- a paint-like material that is used to decorate greenware.

 

wedge- to shape the clay so it has a homogeneus consistency

  

 

Photography Terms

camera- a lightproof box fitted with a lens though which the image of an object is recorded on a material sensetive to light.

 

dark room- a room where you develop pictures. It is in the dark room because it is sensetive to light.

 

develop- to apply chemicals to expose photographic material ( as a film) in order to bring out the picture.

enlarger- a device for transferring a negative image onto photographic paper.

 

hot spot- an extremely light part of a photo that washes out all detail on a developed photograph.

manipulate- to change the form or picture of a part of a negative. 

negative- a smaller version of a photograph in which the lights and darks are switched.

 

photograph- a picture obtained from a camera.

 

photography- the art or proccess of making pictures by means of a camera that directs the image of an object into film made sensetive to light.

 

sandwich- to put two negatives together, and redevelop them into one picture.

Painting Terms

abstract- something that is from one's own imagination, and transferred to art.

gouche- water-based paint/high quality poster-paint. Very expensive and has a nice quality of color.

portrait- a picture (as a painting or photograph) of a person, usually showing the face.
