1957- Vietnam War
After
World War II, Vietnam split into two countries- communist-governed North
Vietnam and non-communist South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted the two Vietnams
to become one nation. Communist China and the Soviet Union supported North
Vietnam while the U.S. supported South Vietnam. In 1975, South Vietnam
lost the war.
1961- Space
Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in outer space.
He orbited the Earth for just one hour and twenty minutes.
1963- Peace March
Martin Luther King,
Jr. led a peaceful march on Washington, D. C. Later that day, he
delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
1967- Heart Transplant
The first heart transplant
was performed by Dr. Christian Bernard in Cape Town, Africa.
1968- M.L.K. Jr. Assassinated
Martin Luther King
Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray while trying
to support a strike of garbage men.
1969-The Moon
Neil Armstrong, an
american astronaut, becomes the first man to land on the moon, in the
"Apollo 11" spacecraft.
