Norway has a very, very unique culture. Norway's population is about four million people. Many Norwegians are of the Nordic descent with blond hair and blue eyes. Although many Norwegians are blond, dark haired people can be found in some places. Norway's official name is " The Kingdom Of Norway". The Royal family includes King Harald V. , Queen Sonja , Prince Haakon , and Princess Märtha Louise. The only minority group of any size is the Lapps. They are reindeer herders. Lapps live mainly in the southern part of Norway. They are of short stature with small round faces and dark hair. There are about 30,000 Lapps in Norway and less in Sweden and Finland. Norway is a nice place to visit but few foreigners live there because of restrictions on admitting workers from abroad. Religions in Norway vary. Almost all Norwegians belong to the lutheran church of Norway. They call the religion Evangelical Lutheran. A major city of Norway is Bergen, it has a population of 200,000 people. The only other city with a population above 100,000 is Trondheim. So as you might have guessed most Norwegian towns are small. Norway contributes to European culture in the fields of art, literature, and music. The oldest literature consists of tales of the old Norse gods. They were written in the 13th century. Popular winter sports in Norway are cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and speed skating. In the summer hiking, mountain climbing, and sailing. As crown prince when he was young King Olav V won an olympic gold medal for yachting. Education is required from the ages of seven to sixteen. Primary school is free. Besides primary and secondary schools there are technical, art, and other vocational schools. There are four universities in Norway. One in each of the following cities, Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Tromsø and eight other institutions with university status. There are also teachers' and engineers' colleges. Norway has an alphabet similar to the American one. They have all the letters in our alphabet like A…...B…...C….. etc. They also have three extra letters Æ…...Ø…….and Å. Norway is very, very interesting. The culture contributes to that. Norwegians are different from Americans in there own way. So if you want to learn more about this country read books.
