As early as May 8, 1945 Norway's military reclaimed Nazi occupied parts of Norway. Troops from Britain, France, and Sweden joined them. During the war Germany claimed almost 40 percent of Norway's land. A total of 10,262 Norwegians lost their lives in the war and about 40,000 were in prison. In 1946 the rebuilding of Norway was started. They planned it would take about five years, but because of its economy it went even faster. During that time Norway held a very low profile of foreign policy. Between 1948 and 1951 foreign policy was getting started again. In 1949 Norway joined the NATO. After that the economy just went up. In 1960's the oil age had begun and Norway had the richest finds in the North Sea. After that the petroleum age started and Norway started its trade and major industries. Norway had problems competing internationally. The Norwegian economy has been beset by problems, where also the government had to have cut backs. Unemployment has also become a problem, although the statistics are among the lowest in Europe, but it can still stand from its many exports.
