In the 1814's Norway had its worst economic depression because there was no more trade between Denmark, there where no more foreign customers for mining and wood, and the rich people were bankrupt. Then in 1830's Norway enjoyed a period of economic buoyancy, which fed demands for freer trade. Norway was building its economic up again and took part in many general developments in Europe. The first railway line was laid and the first telegraph lines were erected. The foundation for modern industry in Norway was laid in the 1840's with the established of the first textile factories and engineering workshops. Between 1850 and 1880 the size of the Norwegian merchant fleet increased drastically. In 1859-1905 there were many conflicts with Sweden but in 1905 an agreement on a peaceful dissolution under certain conditions was formed.
