In the 1450's the Norwegian income had sand dramatically so Norway formed a union with Denmark. The union was established by treaty. A treaty supposedly meant to ensure the power of the Norwegian Council of the Realm when a monarch was being selected, though this stipulation was never respected. In 1536 Norway ceased to be an independent kingdom. This came out at a national assembly in Copenhagen. The Danish noblemen agreed but said that they may take position as officers in law in Norway so they had a income from Denmark and Norway. This close political link with Denmark drew Norway unavoidable into the wars that Denmark waged with Sweden and the Baltic Sea powers. It led the Danish king to surrender Norwegian land to Sweden. The land was returned from Sweden two years later. The policy with Denmark grew later to just a economic unit. They were strong import partners in the 1700's because almost all Norwegian-Denish exports and imports went over Copenhagen. During 1807-1813 the Napoleanic Wars begun. Denmark, Norway, and France were allies, as a result blockage from Denmark and from the market. Hunger spread over the country and the king assigned some commissioners for the task of getting food was established in 1811.
