The commander-in-chief of the Union Army was Ulysses S. Grant. For the Confederate Army it was Robert E. Lee.
Some of the other generals were George McLellan, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Thomas Hooker, George Meade, and Pierre Beauregard. Generals did not not mainly fight. They rode up down the lines making sure everything was all right. Some generals trained to soldiers.
