Wetlands are on the verge of extinction because people are literally tearing them down for farmland. Many of these wetlands are in Carolina and the eastern states. These simple places are one of the last refuges for migratory birds, swans, and geese. Wetlands are formed when a low place with grasses experiences a flood. Then, when the rains leave the water is left there. If the water soaks into the ground and stays moist after many years it will be dubbed a wetland. Also, wetlands can form next to a river where excess water instead of rain fills the lowland. There are four kinds of wetlands: marshes, salt water marshes, swamps, and river swamps.
