The desert is an interesting biome. It is one of the six major biomes. The desert is located in many places on the earth. When you read this page you will be reading about the desert.
There are many locations for the desert. These places are in the continents of North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Deserts are usually between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
The desert gets up to 131 degrees F or 55 degrees C during the day. During the night, the temperature drops near freezing. The desert is characterized by its annual rainfall which is about 10 in. or 254 mm a year!
One animal in the desert is the camel which can stand considerable dehydration. Another animal is the horned toad. It slows down its heartbeat. The oryx varies its body temperature. Some plants like the had bush and aristida grass grow in the desert like cacti, the plural for cactus.
Deserts cover a fifth of land on the earth. The Sahara desert is the biggest desert. It takes roughly enough area to equal the United States. A wild fact is that scientists say that because of the amount of precipitation Antarctica gets, it is a desert. There are deserts in every continent but one. That continent is Europe. Scientist can not agree on one definition for the word desert. Deserts have at least one permanent stream.
