In North America you think of Jesus as the god,but Greeks believed in deities (gods and goddess).They believed that the gods and goddess watched over them.Some families would thank the deities by giving them offering and ceremonies.The city-states   would hold festivals for them.           Greek mythology was a big part of religion in Ancient Greece.  Though they were just legends many people beleived the myths about it and that they were heroes.  Myths are tales about gods and goddesses or other super natural beings.   Myths usually explained origins of the world or either how humans costoms came to be.            The Greeks believed in many gods and goddesses who controlled the world.  The gods looked and acted like the greeks themselves ,they even made the same mistakes.  They were stronger as well as immortal [able to live forever].  These beliefs most likely started with the first Greek-speeking inhabitants, who also adopted some of religious thoughts of the earlier,non-Greek people.  even though the Greekwere very religious , religion never interupted with their need to experiment, explore and think freely for themselves.
