It was Sunday,April 14,1912. The stars were out and it was a cold night.
Most of the passengers on the Titanic were asleep. Captain Edward J.Smith
was in his study. The crew was looking out for icebergs for which they
had received warning . Since it was such a calm night it was hard to see
breaking water. The crew suddenly spotted one straight ahead. They tried
to turn and miss it but it was too late, they hit it making a gash in its
right side. They closed the water tight compartments but that didn't work, the
ship was already going down.
The crew was ordered to give all the passengers their life jackets. First,
they accompanied the first class passen-
gers to the boat deck. The captain
ordered women and child-
ren first. None of the wives
wanted to leave their husbands. One wife even stayed with her husband on
the ship to die together.
Next, the crew got all the second class passengers on the boat deck. There
was a wide spread panic everywhere on the ship. Some men were trying
to get on a life boat. There is even a reported case of a man dressing
up as a women to get on a life boat. While all this was going on the third
sengers were trying to get up
on deck.Since there were so many people and not enough life boats for everyone
the crew men locked
the gates to the deck. That meant the third class passengers were trapped
down in the ship like rats.
It was in the middle of the night on April
14,1912,the Titanic went down. Over one-thousand five hundred people lost
their lives on the great ship Titanic.Only seven- hundred
and five people survived. The
Carpathia picked up all the surviviors.
Today,even after 86 years,millions of people
are still greatly fascinated by Titanic. One fact will always stand, the
Titanic will always go on.
