How to Play Chess

If you want to learn chess, this is the place. If you're not interested, too bad. And this is how:

The pawn can move 2 spaces forward on its first move, then one space per move. The knight can move up 3 spaces and across one space always. It is the only piece that can jump over pieces. The bishop can move on a clear diagonal. The rook can move on a clear vertical or horizontal direction.

The Queen can move on a clear diagonal, vertical, or horizontal direction. The King can move exactly like the Queen, but only one space per move if the square is not attacked by an enemy piece.

Notation

Notation is how to write down chess moves. There is a possibility that if you didn't write down the exact moves, the other person playing could win or lose.

The spaces on a chessboard have names, all of them. The lines full of vertical lines are called files. The lines full of horizontal lines are called ranks. The file on the far right is the a-file. Over one other file is the b-file and so on until you get to the far right file named the h-file. The rank nearest to white's side is called the 1st rank. Up another rank is the 2nd rank and so on. So if you start on the a1 square and go up 6 sqaures you would be on the a6 square. And before each game you play, white square to the far right, bottom or your notation will be faulty. The letter which goes in front of the file & row stands for the letter of the piece. The king stands for K. The queen stands for Q. The rook stands for R. The bishop stands for B. The knight stands for N. And the pawn doesn't stand for anything because some chess players agreed on that.
