Geography of Mexico
Mexico is a large country compared to many others. It is 761,601
square miles in area. Some of mexico's major land forms are the Eastern
Sierra Madres, the Western Sierra Madres, the Central Plateau, the Baja
California Peninsula, and the Yucatan Peninsula. Mexico has many
volcanoes, too. The majority of the volcanoes are inactive, but sometimes
a sleeping volcano erupts in a cloud of ash and dust.
Mexico shares
borders with Guatemala, Belize and The United States of America.
The United States border is 1,900 miles long. About half of that
border is made up by the Rio Grande, a large river 1,885 miles long.
Mexico has four water borders. To the west is the Pacific Ocean and
the Gulf of California. To the east is the Gulf of Mexico and the
Caribbean Sea.
Mexico has
three climate regions. The tierra templada, or temperate zone makes
up the higher part of the Central Plateau in Mexico. The tierra caliente,
or hot zone, makes up the lowlands on the east and west coasts of Mexico.
The tierra fria, or cold zone, is mostly made up of the Sierra Madres where
the elevation makes it cold.
