Brief History
Before Mexico was independent, Spain was in control of it.
Then in 1810 Father Miguel Hidalgo gave his famous speech ''The Cry of
Dolores." That was the speech which started the Mexican Revolution. He
marched 90,000 people to Mexico City where he was defeated by 6,000 Spanish
soldiers. After that Father Hidalgo was captured and killed. Next, Jose
Morelos took charge of the rebellion. He was captured and killed just like
Hidalgo. Then a Spanish soldier by the name of Agustine de Iturbide saw
how the Mexicans were being treated so he switched sides and helped the
Mexicans gain their independence from Spain.
In 1821 Iturbide wrote an independence plan for Mexico
which made him president. After he was chosen president he was run out
of power because he was a bad ruler. Soon Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became
the president. At this time American settlers wanted Texas to become a
state. Since Santa Anna said no, they rebelled. This rebellion is know
as the Texas Rebellion. After the rebellion Sam Houston brought down an
Army and defeated Santa Anna. Houston captured him, so Santa Anna
gave up Texas to save his life. In about a year we made Texas the 28th
State. The mexicans were mad so they attacked us. We sailed down to Veracruz
and then marched over to Mexico City and took control of the country. We
gave them back their country, and paid them 15 million dollars for a piece
land. In a few years the French invaded Mexico and took control of it.
They put an Austrian Prince in charge. His name was Maximilian. Right after
they invaded, the French troops were needed back in France to fight a war.
Then Jose Orozco swept in and took control over Mexico. After he died Porfirio
Diaz became president. He brought order to Mexico, but he was a bad leader
because he had too much power. Next Francisco Madero started a rebellion.
The leader in the north was Pancho Villa, in the south they were led by
Emilio Zapata. Then in 1917 they formed a new constitution which helped
everyone. |
