Southern Bald Ibis

DESCRIPTION

The Southern Bald Ibis has a red beak, a red bald head, and red eyes. It's face is all white. The rest of it's body has black feathers, except for it's feet which are orange. They have long narrow beaks. Ibises have sturdy legs that are about 12 inches long. When these birds fly, the Ibises, like other birds, are long-legged waders.

FOOD

They eat insects, crabs, mollusks, and worms from the ground. Sometimes, these birds will catch frogs and small rodents. Ibises have even been known to catch a few hummingbirds.

HABITAT

These birds live in marshy tropical areas. The Sothern Bald Ibis lives in parts of South Africa and its relative, the Nothern Bald Ibis, can be found in North Africa and Europe.

INTERESTING FACTS

Their long, narrow beaks help them to pick up food from the ground. When these birds fly they alternate their wing strokes with gliding movments.
