Scarlet Macaw
DESCRIPTION
Scarlet Macaws are about 35-36 inches (3 feet) long. They are known for their size, long tail, and brilliant colors. The wing coverts are yellow, turning green. The flight feather are blue. The lower part of the back is a lighter blue. The tail coverts are blue. The tail feathers are red. The macaws legs are grey-brown. Around the cheeks and the eyes there is no feathers, execpt for a little bit of scattered ones.
FOOD
The Scarlet Macaw likes to eat lots of things. It likes fruits, nuts, seeds, and has even been seen licking clay. Hard nuts, fruits, and shells are cracked open by the beak.
HABITAT
Scarlet Macaws live in the rainforest of Mexico, Central,and South America.They are known to have very large territories. They like to nest in holes high up in trees. They prefer lowland
tropical rainforest up to 900 cm.

BABY MACAWS
Breeding season starts in early December. The clutch (however many eggs the female lays) has up to 4 eggs. The eggs are a little larger then pigeon eggs. A baby macaw doesn't open its eyes til after 4 weeks. It becomes fully feathered after 10 weeks. It doesn't leave the nest til about another 3 weeks. At 6 months, it is as big as its parents and looks like them too. The parent incubates the eggs for 4 weeks. At age 2 or 3 years old the Scarlet Macaw leaves its parents.
INTERESTING FACTS
Scarlet Macaws can fly up to 30 mph. They can live up to 80 years old. The beak can act like a third foot for climbing. The Scarlet Macaw is on the endangered species list, because to many people take them from the wild and sell them.
