Native Americans around Mount St. Helens say they saw Mount St. Helens, puff out a little ash, steam, and lava in the mid 1800s. It seemed nice and quiet until March 1980. Mount St. Helens awakened from its very long sleep. On March 27 Mount St. Helens began to shoot out ash and steam. By May more than 10,000 small quakes occurred. The next eruption happened at 8:32 a.m. May 18th. It erupted at the power of 10,000,000 tons of dynamite. That eruption was the most destructive in the history of the United States. It also created the enormous crater on top of the volcano.
