About
Project E.F.F.E.C.T.
The Project E.F.F.E.C.T. house was built in 1996 when past group member Kara Bidden had the idea for the house. The group had a lock-in soon after, where they stayed together all night to make plans for the house. One of the main games was to find a name for the house in which all the letters had a meaning. At three o’clock in the morning, two girls came rushing to Mr. Hamilton and told him the name “E.F.F.E.C.T.”. This means Environmentally Friendly Facility Exploring Conservation Technology. The house then added “Project” to E.F.F.E.C.T. because the E.F.F.E.C.T. House is one BIG project!
Plants around the house:
* the plants in the house purify the air--the best plants for this are Boston Fern, English Ivy, Tulips, Peace Lilies, Lady Jane, Weeping Fig, Chrysanthemum, Gerber Daisy and King of Heart.
Outdoor Classrooms:
There are four outdoor classrooms. The staff at the S.A.V.E. house takes kids to these outdoor areas to gather them easily into groups. The newest classroom has plastic lumber which is made from recycled milk jugs.
Furniture and Rugs:
* The couches were donated by the grandparents of S.A.V.E. members.
* The rug in the studio is made of recycled soda bottles.
* The small rug in the Project E.F.F.E.C.T. house is made from blue jeans.
* Another rug is made from recycled tires.
The Kitchen:
* The stovetop only works if there is a certain pot on it. This saves electricity by preventing people from leaving it on. It is also safe for children because it prevents them from burning themselves.
* The napkins are recycled and aren’t bleached.
* All dishcleaning substances are environmentally friendly.
Miscellaneous:
* Stairs are made from lumber from a torn down office building in Philadelphia.
* Window quilts are used as a kind of insulation which saves heat and energy.
* The insulation in the house is made of recycled newspapers.
* One plant pot in the house is made from recycled aluminum cans.
* The S.A.V.E. display area upstairs shows some items that they use that are less noticeable—lighting, air filters for fans around the house, solar panels, picture frames made from recycled materials.
The bathroom:
*has a composting toilet which does not smell, does not use water and produces fertilizer
* the shower is solar powered and saves water.
A Special House!
This environmentally friendly house was built by S.A.V.E. members and is unique not only because of the neat articles inside, it is unique because S.A.V.E. teenagers built most of it themselves! They took much of their time to plan and construct the house. The house us used to teach others about how to preserve habitats of animals by saving water, energy and many other things.
