McPherson Ridge
Just before the battle....

What were the different smaller battles in the larger conflict at Gettysburg?

Lee marched his army north to steal food and horses, destroy railroads, and attack cities. His men were barefooted or if they had shoes, the shoes were falling apart. It was rumored that Gettysburg had a good supply of shoes. Henry Heth offered to go to Gettysburg to buy shoes.

The Confederates thought that Gettysburg had a few volunteer soldiers. What they didn't know was that there was one regiment in town and several regiments about six miles south of Gettysburg.

And so the stage was set for one of the greatest campaigns in all American military history.

Early on July 1st, the Confederates entered the town from the northwest. They met Union soldiers coming from the southeast. They met on a long hill north of town called McPherson Ridge. The Confederates opened fire. Both sides called for help. Twenty-five thousand Confederate and nineteen thousand union soldiers received word of the battle and began to head for Gettysburg.
As the fighting on McPherson Ridge continued, the Confederate soldiers were soon to meet the Union's Iron Brigade. This group of men were made up of midwestern units and known for it's hard fighting and distinctive black hats. This was when the South realized that the "Army of the Potomac" was at Gettysburg. This is what the Union army was called. During this fight, a sharpshooter from the South shot and killed General Reynolds. After more fighting, the Union soldiers won the first battle.
