In 1862, Colonel Chamberlain was assigned to Lieutenant Colonel. Before the time Chamberlain arrived at Gettysburg, he had already been promoted to full Colonel and was in command of the 20th Maine. Chamberlain was born on September 8th, 1828 in Brewer, Maine. Brewer was a small farming and ship-building community. His childhood was spent on his parents farm. Because he was the oldest of his brother in his family, he was given more responsibility and his sense of duty formed early. In 1848, he entered Bowdain College in Brunswick, Maine. Colonel Chamberlain believed in the Union. Heres why I say this: Back in command of old brigade, General Chamberlain led his troops at the Battle of Five Forks which broke the Confederate hold on Petersburg. |
